Mehedinti is a county in the Oltenia and Banat regions in southwest Romania. The county seat is the municipality of Drobeta-Turnu Severin. Mehedinti County was mentioned in the opus of Anthony Maria Del Chiaro in 1718 as one of the 17 counties of Wallachia, being at that time with Jiul de Sus, Jiul de Jos, Valcea and Romanati under the Empire's occupation. There are two possible origins of Mehedinti: a Latin one, derived from the ancient "Mediam", a Roman colony near Mehadia (Caras-Severin) or the Hungarian: "meheszkedes" - stuparit (mehek meaning bee). The image of bees in heraldry of the region of Mehedinti seems to confirm the second etymological origin.
