Harghita is a county located in eastern Transylvania, in the central area of Romania. The county seat is Miercurea Ciuc. Harghita County is inhabited by an absolute majority of Hungarians. According to census data from 2011, more than 84% of the inhabitants declared themselves Hungarians. The county was founded in 1968 by the territorial reorganization of Mures-Hungarian Autonomous Region (from Toplita, Gheorgheni, Odorheiu Secuiesc and Miercurea Ciuc districts). Most of the territory of today's county was part of Ciuc and Odorhei counties, Ciuc and Odorhei counties (with residences in Miercurea Ciuc and Odorheiu Secuiesc). Before 1876, the territory of today's county was part of the Ciuc Secuial Chairs (with the Giurgeu and Casin branch chairs) and Odorhei (with the Bradut and Cristuru Secuiesc branch offices).
