The Palace of Culture in Ploiesti

The Palace of Culture is the most imposing of the oldest buildings of the city. Works started before the First World War broke out during the war and were completed in the early 1930s. The edifice was inaugurated in the presence of King Carol II on November 26, 1933.

It is a massive, monumental building with a large central body and two main wings that intersect it close to the heads. It has a semi-basement, a ground floor and a very tall one and a slightly lower one. Built in French neo-classical style, the palace impresses with style, symmetry and balance, as well as the variety of the four registers of the facade. Particularly successful is the main entrance, located on the first floor, on the southern side of the central body. Access is permitted by a two-way roadway and the wide steps of a monumental staircase; a strong colonnade encloses the three massive doors. Inside, the ground floor and the first floor contained several large meeting rooms, some with wood paneling and casted ceilings. It is also worth mentioning a vast hallway that includes a good part of the first floor, in height and the second floor. It has massive columns and is illuminated by the ceiling. The hall, in the past - the hallmark of the lost steps-- is now the best exhibition space in the city.

In the years 1951-1953, the building was intended for the Palace of Culture, but six years ago a part of the eastern wing was affected by the newly established Ploiesti Court of Appeal. Renovated seriously after the 1977 earthquake, the palace retains its unaltered initial shape and houses a number of high-value cultural institutions: the County Museum of Human Bilogy, the Ethnography Museum, the School of Arts.

County Museum of Human Biology, Ploiesti

It is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Ploiesti and the only one that has never changed its headquarters. It was inaugurated in 1956 and led for nearly two decades by Professor Margareta Mosneaga, who had put an endless energy and competence in the service of his creation.

Installed in the Palace of Culture he expanded, including a good portion of his first floor. He also underwent transformations, some imposed (a museum of human biology), enriching his heritage and extending his themes.

The museum uses the most varied exhibition techniques: planes, dioramas and trioramas, preserved animals and birds, mock-ups and reconstructions, some functional ones, projections, etc.

The work is constantly expanding with an aquarium, with a museum of man, with temporary goblen exhibitions, tending to become an encyclopaedic museum.
