The museum was inaugurated on April 12, 1970 and, as the name says, is trying to keep alive in the memory of visitors the place where artist Gheorghe Petrascu (December 2, 1872, Tecuci - May 1, 1949, Bucharest) chose by building of the house with a spacious workshop, to work reluctantly and undisturbed by the noise of the big cities. The quiet and patriarchal city, situated near Bucharest, with a picturesque and varied landscape, and with many monuments and prints of glorious history, helped the modest artist to link his creation and life to Targoviste.
Representative artist in the Romanian plastic art and the first artist of the Romanian Academy, influenced during Grigorescu's new artistic beginnings regarding the presentation of the subjects, Gheorghe Petrascu will work in Targoviste in 1924 for nearly 20 years, after the narrative of the Nicoresti workshop and after the numerous trips, from which he had a series of impressions that fixed in the richly colored works the places that impressed him.

The permanent exhibition has a strong memorial character trying, within the bounds of the patrimony, to recreate something from the atmosphere of the workshop with a wide saw to the north and view to the garden and the walls of the works. Here, the art collection includes landscapes from its various travels in the country (Siret, Dobrogea, Nicoresti, Agapia etc) and abroad: Egypt (1906), Italy, Spain, Balchik. The artist knew the surroundings quite well when he decided in the spring of 1922 to build his workshop in Targoviste because he had painted in Viforata in 1914. in 1926 he opened a personal exhibition at the "Art of the Arts" in Bucharest where he presents numerous paintings, drawings and watercolors, showing landscapes from his travels abroad and from Viforata, Aninoasa and Targoviste.
In the exhibition, some early works can be admired and studied, such as "Reading Assuan", but also landscapes in which Grigorescian influences are felt. There are also a series of works illustrating, in his style and the specific chromatic range, his favorite flowers - the carriages - discovered at a German Gardon florist on Mihai Bravu Street, flowers that he had filled in at one time and the garden from the face of the house. From his travels through the country and abroad, he has immortalized places and landscapes such as -Casa at Vitré-, -Paisaj marin- (Venice), -Thousse at Chioggia- from the maturity period when the thick paste and the black outline already characterized him.
