Focsani

Focsani is the capital city of Vrancea County, on the border between the historical regions of Moldova and Muntenia, Romania, consisting of the localities Focsani (residence), Madreşti-Moldova and Madreşti-Munteni. It has a population of 79,315 inhabitants.

A settlement has existed in this place since the thirteenth century, where Civitas Milcovia, the seat of the Catholic Bishopric of Milcov, is located. In the fifteenth century a Cetatea Crăciune was erected on a nearby hill, which Stephen the Great fortified in 1482 as an outpost in the path of Ottoman expansion.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century it was recorded as a village, and after 1615-1620 it was mentioned as a fair at the intersection of the commercial roads between Wallachia and Moldavia. In the 17th-18th centuries, the importance of the settlement, with its two parts - Moldavian and Wallachian - rose again, as evidenced by the large number of churches and monasteries built here.
