The archaeological excavations attest to the existence of these lands since the middle of the third millennium BC. The first written notes about Murgeni as a community of free people (razesi) appear during the reign of Alexandru cel Bun (1400-1432) and are added during the reign of Stephen the Great (1457-1504) time when the city is archaeologically documented. As a testimony of Murgeni, the legend is preserved in the folk tradition that the inhabitants of the Prut valley met Stephen the Great at Adjud in 1457. As one who saw the light of day in these places - Dimitrie Cantemir, a world-renowned scholar, left us a particularly precious work titled "Moldaviae--" (1716), on whose map is also recorded Murgeni.
