Situated at an altitude of 126 m above the Black Sea, the city is situated on a terrace formed by the meadow of the lower Somes. Being a border town, it has openings by road through Hungary to Petea Customs, and railroad to Ukraine, to Halmeu Customs. The main internal links are formed by the route coming from Oradea passing to Baia Mare and Sighet (through Oasului country), as well as to Zalau. Another gateway, not only domestic but also international, is the one created by the Bucharest - Satu Mare airline and the temporary air routes from northern Europe. From a geomorphologic point of view, the territory of the town is located on the Somes river meadow on both sides of the river, narrowed in the area of the city and stretched upstream and downstream; Flooded during the abundant rainfall, alluvial field in the meadow takeover has various relief configurations in the border of the city (girders, depressions valleys, micro-depressions, parasites, etc.). The formation of the current relief of the town's area dates back to the end of the pliocene of the tertiary era, being related to the clogging of Pannon Lake. Soil stratigraphy is represented by sand, loess, and gravel deposits, generally 160-180 cm thick, over which, due to vegetation, podzolic soils were created, thus creating favorable conditions for agricultural crops (cereals, vegetables, trees trees).
