Situated on the northern bank of the Danube, it occupies an area of 246.4 km2 at the confluence of the rivers Siret (west) and Prut (east), near Lake Brateş, around. 80 kilometers from the Black Sea. The nearest town is Braila, just 15 kilometers south. Galaţi is at the meeting of the three historical provinces of Romania: Muntenia, Moldova and Dobrogea. The city and harbor unfold as a vast amphitheater with a level difference of 3 to 55 meters.
The city stretches over three terraces: the city's valley, with an altitude of 3 to 7 m and two others, drawn almost in the form of fans; the first with an altitude of 20-25 m (the core of the medieval city, now the city center) and the second one with altitudes exceeding 40 m (the modern city). The life of the human communities was influenced directly by the Danube, the second river in Europe as a length (2,850 km), with an average flow in this sector of 6,119 mc / s, after receiving the waters of the Siret River upstream an average flow of 225 m / s (the largest tributary on the Romanian territory). The river continued its way to the Black Sea after receiving the Prut River downstream of the ports of Galaţi, with an average flow of 86 mc / s. The flows of the Danube have an important variation, depending on season and year, with maximum values in May (18,000 - 19,000 mc / s) and minimum during summer (2,000 - 2,450 mc / s). Due to the deep channel down to the city of Braila, the Danube is declared maritime.
